Setting new skincare intentions

The beginning of a new year can feel like a bit of a reset. You’ve had time to pause and reflect over summer, and can come into the new year with renewed focus and energy. This makes it a great time for setting intentions - the act of stating what you intend to achieve through your actions.

Our Five Skincare Intentions

Intentions can be broad such as “I intend to be grateful today”, or they can be specific to help you achieve particular goals. Setting a strong intention sets you up for focus and success. So here are our intentions for beautiful skin.

1/ Hydrate with Food and Water

Without adequate water supply, skin cell structure deteriorates and leads to visible signs of ageing. Hydrating your skin starts with your diet. Our skin needs to be hydrated in order to look healthy and plump, so we can help by drinking water and eating foods that promote skin health. Nuts, seeds, avocados and oily fish can improve overall hydration levels of the skin, as well as the dermal levels. It also pays to “drink your water” by eating healthy amounts of fruits and vegetables. These foods have water surrounded by molecules that facilitate the entry of water into cells, providing you with lasting hydration.

2/ Double Cleanse

A double cleanse involves washing your face twice in the evenings. The first cleanse removes make up, sunscreen and any debris and build up. The second cleanse is then done with a clean slate, so your cleansing products can really reach your skin and work their magic. Even if you don’t wear makeup, it’s important to double cleanse to remove any pollutants that can break down collagen and contribute to the development of wrinkles and sunspots. However, if you have super sensitive skin, you may want to stick with a single cleanse to prevent skin from over-drying.

3/ Sleep on a Silk Pillow

Silk pillows feel totally luxurious, and are also a treat for your skin. Because of their smooth surface, this means the pillow tugs less on your skin during the night. Silk pillows are also less likely to absorb moisture from skin, meaning you stay more hydrated throughout the night. They are also gentler on the skin for people who suffer from conditions such as acne and dry skin.

4/ Face Massage

Facial massage uses facial treatments to lift and smoothen your skin. It makes use of the fascial system, which is made up of collagen and elastin. Facial massage improves skin by releasing tension in the face and jaw. To give yourself a face massage at home – lean your elbows on a table and let your hands wrap gently around your chin and lower face, gently push the skin upwards, then turn to one side and sweep the whole side of the face up to the hairline. Then with both thumbs in the middle of the forehead, sweep across the forehead and up to the hairline. You might like to do this with a facial oil to assist with the movement.

5/ Apply SPF Daily

Sunscreen is an absolute skincare non-negotiable and the best way to prevent premature ageing. We suggest you look for a product with both UVA and UVB protection and a high SPF of at least 30. Sunscreen products are much more sophisticated now and many can sit nicely under your make up and work almost as a primer. If you’re spending time outdoors, pop some sunscreen in your bag and remember to reapply throughout the day.
