We all know how important sun protection is in summer. But during the cooler months, we can all be a bit guilty of dropping the ball in terms of covering up. The truth is, whether it is overcast or a bluebird sunshiny day, it is always important that you wear sunscreen. Luckily now with advances in technology, there are some super sophisticated sunscreen products that can suit your skin all year round. 

 Why Sunscreen Is Important, No Matter the Season 

Sunscreen is vital every day of the year, no matter the month or season. Even in the colder months with fewer daylight hours, our skin is still exposed to damaging UV rays. Because we don’t feel the sun so much during these times, we are less inclined to cover up, meaning the sun damage we experience can actually be worse than in the peak of summer. On the flip side, winter conditions such as snow can cause reflective light, meaning we essentially double the amount of skin exposure and damage we can have. Basically, everyone needs sunscreen no matter their age, gender, race, location or season. So whether you’re in the mountains, or cruising around the city mid-year, it’s still super important to look out for your skin.  

What Does Sunscreen Actually Do 

Sunscreen blocks harmful UVA and UVB rays from our skin. Wearing sunscreen, therefore, helps to prevent premature ageing (such as wrinkles, pigmentation and sunspots), as well as melanomas and cancers. SPF stands for sun protection factor, which gives an indication of how well a product protects skin against sun exposure. The higher the SPF level, the better. SPF is also combined in many makeup and skincare products now, so it can serve a dual purpose by acting as a cosmetic product as well. 

How To Best Wear Sunscreen 

Sunscreen is the most important skincare product you can use. We recommend wearing sunscreen every day, avoiding direct sunlight during peak hours, and reapplying every two hours. Use water-resistant sunscreen when engaging in water or snow sports, and also cover up with long layers to create a physical barrier between UV rays and your skin. We suggest you always keep sunscreen in your handbag and in your car so you never get caught out.  

What To Look For

When looking for a sunscreen product, we suggest you look for a high SPF (30 or higher), look for a broad spectrum product that protects against both UVA and UVB rays, and look for a product that is easy to apply – meaning you will be more likely to use it.
